About this solution

A rooftop sign is visible for kilometres and, unlike any other form of outdoor advertising, works for the whole city rather than just the street it stands on. It is the mark that says a building belongs to a company.

Technically it is first of all a structural problem. The letters sit on a steel frame of their own, calculated for wind loading at that height and fixed to the building's structure rather than to its waterproofing. Weight, wind area and anchoring method are settled before any conversation about appearance.

The letters are usually made from aluminium and acrylic at sizes measured in metres, front-lit or halo-lit. At height, legibility matters more than detail: thin typefaces and fine ornament disappear at distance, and contrast against the night sky does more than colour.

Access for maintenance is designed alongside the structure. A route, a walkway or anchor points provided from the start are the difference between a sign serviced in a morning and one that needs a crane hired to reach it.

Frequently asked questions

All frequently asked questions
What is checked before a rooftop sign is installed?

The building's structure and how the frame can be anchored, wind loading at that height, the power route, and access for installation and maintenance. Just as important is what lies under the roof: the fixing must not pierce the waterproofing without a sealing solution.

How much does a rooftop sign cost?

Here the structure often costs as much as the letters. The price is made of three parts: the steel frame, calculated for wind loading at that height, the letters — measured in metres, so a different cost per piece than shopfront ones — and access, because at height installation needs a crane or a lift and days of work rather than hours. Tell us the building, the height and the text, and we do the structural check first and the quote after.
